Your Safety
Your Safety and Our Disclaimer
YOUR SAFETY.
We have very effective spam control in place to prevent non-genuine membership applications from being admitted. Details of some of these measures are shown in red on the albanyozfreecycle home page. There are also other methods making the protection of members' identities and details a multi layer thing.
Concerning your transactions with other members, we believe our members are trustworthy, nice people, but we have no way of identifying any odd one that may not be, therefore, (and this applies to all internet activity, not just on our site), it is necessary to say 'Be aware!'
What follows is lifted from the American Freecycle handbook. We all know that the situation in say Chicago is likely to be vastly different to that in Albany, Denmark or Mt Barker, so let's not get too paranoid about this, but it is worth considering...
"It is up to each individual member of a Freecycle group when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. The Freecycle Network™ and member groups, as listservs, assume no responsibility for this risk. It may be wise to arrange for a drop-off at a public place (shopping area, library, etc.); or if you do give a member your address, to leave the item on the porch without mentioning whether or not you'll be home. If you are, for example, a single woman living alone, these measures are recommended, or you may have somebody with you at home, so it doesn't appear that you live alone. Only you can decide whether such measures are necessary in your particular situation."
Neither can we guarantee the safety or suitability of any item obtained from another member. We are just the means of putting you in touch with each other, it is your responsibility to decide whether the product is safe to use and capable of performing the function for which you intend using it. Be particularly careful with electrical products. Being a gift, not a purchase, they have probably not had a professional safety check. Similarly infant items, many of which should be to Australian Standards, (cots, car seats and the like).
